The method

How we rank

typeface.top blends four signals into one weekly leaderboard. Each signal moves on its own cadence, so the ranking stays current without chasing noise.

Google Fonts popularity

Live now

The Google Fonts Developer API gives us a license-safe baseline: the official popularity order for open-source families. A job runs every Monday and stores that week's ranking in our own database, so the leaderboard is a real, queryable history — not a one-off snapshot.

Fontsource downloads

Live now

Every open-source family on Fontsource is published as an npm package. We read the public npm download counts each week, which shows how often a typeface is actually installed into real projects — not just previewed. Free, public data, refreshed by the same Monday job.

GitHub activity

Live now

For open-source foundries we track live star counts from each font's own repository, refreshed by the same weekly job — so fast-moving indie projects can climb before they reach mainstream catalogues.

Community votes

Live now

Signed-in people upvote fonts, one vote per person per font. Votes are counted the moment they land: the leaderboard listens for changes and reorders itself in real time, with a small seed score so unranked indie work can still show up.

Still to come

  • The Combinator: pair heading and body fonts with heuristic and curated rules.
  • Exportable pairing recommendations as CSS and Tailwind snippets.
  • Weekly digest emails when your favourite fonts move in the ranks.
